Here’s a rundown of what’s making news at the University of Mississippi this week:
TOP STORY:
- WHY OLE MISS ACCOUNTANCY GRADS ARE RECRUITED BY BIG FIRMS
- The University of Mississippi School of Accountancy consistently ranks among the top accountancy programs in the country beating out SEC peers and Ivy League schools. That trend is bound to continue with some good news (and big donations!) for the nationally renowned program. It is the first chair established by a firm in the UM program.
- This week, the university announced that the KPMG LLP (one of “the big four”) firm has elevated a previously funded professorship to the prestigious chair level with a $1.5 million gift.
- At the same time, the family of Louise Avent, a 1947 graduate of the accountancy school and its first female Hall of Fame member, gave $250,000 to establish four annual accountancy scholarships.

Old Taylor Bridge and Roundabout Open to Traffic: The new double roundabout and bridge with a pedestrian path has opened on Old Taylor Road just in time for the big student migration back to campus later this month. The roundabouts should make traffic flow much better on the busy road and also provide relief to those who work and live in the heavily-populated area but have been dealing with detours since construction began earlier this year.
