The poverty-stricken Mississippi Delta community of Hollandale might seem like an unlikely place to find a rising Latin program, but it is home to this year's winner of the Magnolia State's high school Latin examination.
Led by Mississippi Teacher Corps participant Austin Walker, an English teacher who graduates Saturday with a master's in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi, students at Simmons High School studied Latin this academic year for the first time in school history. The work paid off as Alexis Hicks, a 15-year-old sophomore, outscored students from established programs to take first place on the statewide high school Latin exam.

Michael Manning to receive diploma Saturday at UM commencement
Michael Manning
OXFORD,
Miss. - Six years ago, Michael Manning lay in a hospital bed unsure of
his future. An automobile accident had left him paralyzed from the
waist down and unable to return to his job with a railroad company.
On
Saturday (May 9), Manning, 28, of Horn Lake, will begin a new future as
he and other students receive degrees from the University of
Mississippi. Manning majored in nutrition and dietetics in the
Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, part of the School of
Applied Sciences. He is among the school's 489 graduates who will be
awarded diplomas at 11 a.m. at the Indoor Practice Facility.
A
graduate of Horn Lake High School, Manning was 23 when he was injured
after falling asleep driving home from work. After 32 days on life
support and a year of rehabilitation in Atlanta, Manning began trying
to figure out his next step.
Ironically, the path he chose resulted from his experience in the hospital and in rehabilitation.

Annual Frist Awards to be presented May 9 at commencementOXFORD,
Miss. - Students at the University of Mississippi are inspired daily by
faculty and staff who understand their workday does not end at 5 p.m.
This could include a telephone call at 6 p.m., followed by a Facebook
posting at 9 p.m. and an e-mail at midnight.
Michael Johansson
For the 15th year,
two UM members who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to students
have been selected for special recognition. Ellen Meacham, journalism
career coordinator and instructor, and Michael Johansson, director of
International Programs, are recipients of the 2009 Frist Student
Service Awards.
The awards, one for faculty and one for staff,
were established with a gift from the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist Sr., of
Nashville, a 1930 UM graduate.
"This year's recipients epitomize
the Frist Awards, which are given to faculty and staff who make
extraordinary commitments to students," said Chancellor Robert Khayat.
"Dr. Frist was a wonderful man who made remarkable contributions to
health care in America, as well as to the city of Nashville. He had a
lifelong, affectionate relationship with his alma mater. Ms. Meacham
and Mr. Johansson would have loved Dr. First, and he would have had
great admiration for them."
Each spring, the Ole Miss community
is invited to submit nomination narratives on individuals who personify
extraordinary service. Recipients are selected by a chancellor's
committee of faculty, staff and students assessing the nominations.

Rob Derivaux
OXFORD,
Miss. - Robert Derivaux of Jackson expressed surprise this spring when
he learned he was among the 10 University of Mississippi seniors named
to the school's 2008-09 Hall of Fame.
"I was the last student
they announced, so it was especially exciting," Derivaux said. "It is
a big honor and a bit humbling to be part of such a distinguished group
of Ole Miss alumni who have accomplished what they have at the
university and beyond."
As Derivaux prepares to receive his
bachelor's degree in accountancy at commencement Saturday (May 9), his
record of achievement - including a 4.0 grade-point average - reflects
much more than merely meeting academic requirements.
