OXFORD, Miss. - Take a classic tale of a love triangle, set it to opera
and then stage it with contemporary dance and high-energy rock music,
and you get "Remember Me," an ambitious production by Parsons Dance
that makes a stop Tuesday (Oct. 27) at the University of Mississippi.
Choreographed by Parsons Dance artistic director David Parsons,
"Remember Me" is a joint production with the Emmy-winning rock opera
group East Village Opera Company.
"'Remember Me' is a
collaboration between two highly innovative performing groups," said
Norman Easterbrook, director of UM's Ford Center for the Performing
Arts. "The production seamlessly changes focus between the elements of
music and dance, bringing a different perspective to the most classic
of operatic arias."
The 8 p.m. performance at the Ford Center for the Performing
Arts is the only Mississippi stop on the production's North American
tour. Tickets are $25 each at the UM Box Office, 662-915-7411 or online
at http://olemiss.edu/fordcenter.
The modern narrative of "Remember Me" revolves around the
complicated relationship among main characters Maria (Abby Silva),
Gintus (Miguel Quinones) and Artemis (Zac Hammer). Maria loves Artemis,
but his brother, Gintus, loves Maria.
The story is told through 15 musical numbers, including an
overture and rock adaptations of some of the best-known arias by
Puccini, Donizetti, Bizet and Mozart. The performance includes
contemporary dance, aerial dance, live and recorded music, video
projections, complex digital lighting and visual effects. Easterbrook
heralded the production as "lyricism and fluidity of the human voice
and human movement."
"Remember Me" opened in January to sold-out audiences in New
York. Other tour stops include Dallas, Atlanta, St. Louis, Charlotte,
N.C., and Queretaro, Mexico.
