OXFORD, Miss. - For the eighth year, the University of Mississippi Museum offers for sale the replica of a historic local landmark in a collectible holiday keepsake, this time featuring Oxford City Hall.

The gold-plated, commemorative keepsake is available for $15 plus tax. Collectibles from previous years featuring Barnard Observatory, the Old Skipwith House, Brandt Memory House, the Lyceum, Ventress Hall and the Lafayette County Courthouse can be purchased individually or as a set of eight, including the current edition, for $105 plus tax.

Orders can be placed through the Museum's gift shop from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, or via credit card by telephone at 662-915-7073. Orders to be shipped in time for the holiday must be placed by Dec. 15 and require a $5 handling fee.

"Since 2000, the museum has produced a replica of a historic building on campus as a fundraiser," said Albert Sperath, director of the University Museum and Historic Houses. "This year, we are moving off campus for the heart of Oxford and the University, which is City Hall."

Oxonian and local historian Jack Lamar Mayfield said the original city hall building was erected in 1883 using two $25,000 federal appropriations. Prior to its construction, the University Hotel stood until 1864 when the downtown area was burned to the ground.

"Sometime between 1973 and 1974, the City of Oxford and the federal government made a land swap," Mayfield said. "The agreement moved City Hall from where the Federal Building is now at the corner of 29th Street and West Jackson Avenue."
