Barbara Lago administers the coordination and dissemination of information about The University
of Mississippi among its myriad publics. She also has edited the University's
alumni magazine, coordinated Alumni Affairs publicity, publicized The
Campaign for Ole Miss and its Drive for Athletics, and served as publicist
for Ole Miss' Pharmacy School, research units, science departments and
other academic areas during her 18-plus years in public relations at Ole

Elaine Ferrell Pugh
Assistant Director of Media and Public Relations
Elaine Pugh joined the Media and PR staff in 1986 when she was a journalism student at Ole Miss. She is primary editor of the PR news operation and serves as publicist for the School of Accountancy, J.D. Williams Library, Sarah Isom Center for Women and Department of Economics. She began her UM career as publicist for the School of Law and is the founding editor of the school's alumni magazine, UM Lawyer. She has also covered the National Food Service Management Institute, School of Engineering and other academic units on campus.

Peter joined the staff at Media and Public Relations in 2007 after working for 8 years at the S. Gale Denley Student Media Center on campus. He received his B.S. in journalism and advertising from Ole Miss in 1996. Peter maintains the newsdesk Web site and is working on the new media effort at Ole Miss.

Rebecca Lauck Cleary covers the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, the Department of Student Affairs, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the School of Business Administration. She worked as a graphic designer at the Oxford Eagle and was the editor of Oxford Town for five years before joining the UM Media & Public Relations staff in August 2005. She earned her B.A. in journalism from Ole Miss in 1997.

Jennifer Farish covers the schools of Law and Applied Sciences. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and English. Before returning to the university in March 2006, she worked as a bureau reporter for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, where she covered Lafayette, Pontotoc and Union counties and served as the newspaper's military reporter. Jennifer also spent two years covering government and higher education issues for the Daily News Journal

Purnell covers the School of Applied Sciences, the Division of University
Outreach and Continuing Education, the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the

is formerly a reporter and classified advertising coordinator for the
Greenwood (Miss.) Commonwealth. Purnell, who earned a master’s degree
in journalism from The University of Mississippi, is a 1992 graduate of
Mississippi Valley State University, where she earned a bachelor’s
degree in English with a minor in print journalism.

Edwin Smith covers the School of Engineering, the Graduate School, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Department of English, the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, University Museum and special assignments. Formerly the director of public relations at Rust College, Edwin graduated from UM with a B.A. in 1980 and a M.A. in 1993, both in print journalism. He has worked in the newsrooms of The Grenada Daily Star and The Tulsa World, and was managing editor of Rejoice!: The Gospel Music Magazine. Edwin also taught journalism and advertising at Oral Roberts University.

Lee Eric Smith
Communications Specialist
Lee Eric Smith covers several departments in the College of Liberal Arts, including Art, Political Science, Public Policy Leadership, History, Classics, Chemistry/Biochemistry and Physics and Astronomy. He also covers the Croft Institute for International Studies and the Trent Lott Leadership Institute. Smith is a 1992 UM graduate with degrees in journalism and psychology. He also made history at UM as the first African-American Editor of The Daily Mississippian.
After working at The Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Smith spent 4 1/2 years in corporate communications for Darden Restaurants in Orlando, parent company of Red Lobster and Olive Garden. After a two-year career as a professional speaker and seminar leader, he joined the University in December 2005 as a newsletter specialist in the Publications Department. He moved to Media and Public Relations in November 2007.

Broadcast Communications Specialist
Mary Stanton is responsible
for all internal and external broadcast media relations. Mary earned bachelor’s
degrees in broadcast journalism and English from the University of Mississippi.
After working for five years as a news/sports videographer at WTVA and
WLOV news stations in Tupelo, Miss., Mary joined the University of Mississippi
in April 2005.
