OXFORD, Miss. – To help satisfy the growing demand for on-campus student housing, the University of Mississippi plans to build two new five-story residence halls that will house up to 624 students on the site occupied by Guess Hall.

The $40 million project, New Student Housing Phase 2, began Sept. 8, when a contractor began removing trees and pavement from the Guess Hall parking lot. Demolition of the building is next and is to be completed by January 2015.

Ninety percent of the materials removed from Guess Hall will be recycled, said Thomas Hickman, co-owner of Southern Recycling and Demolition Inc. “We will be reusing all scrap metal and try to send all the tree debris to a wood recycler.”

The project is scheduled to be completed and open for new residents in August 2016.

“We are excited to begin demolition work as this marks the start of construction and delivery of another high-quality student housing facility that residents for many years will enjoy,” said Lionel Maten, assistant vice chancellor for enrollment management and housing.
