Award-Winning Poet Visiting UM for Lecture

Terrance Hayes to speak Nov. 6 as part of Edith T. Baine Lecture Series

OXFORD, Miss. – Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes will visit the University of Mississippi Nov. 6 as part of the seventh annual Edith T. Baine Lecture Series for Scholars and Writers.

The event, set for 6 p.m. in Bondurant Hall Auditorium, is sponsored by the Baine lecture series and the UM Department of English. It is free and open to the public.

Hayes is the author of six poetry collections:

  • “American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin” (Penguin, 2018), a finalist for the National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award and TS Eliot Prize
  • “How to Be Drawn” (Penguin, 2015)
  • “Lighthead” (Penguin, 2010), winner of the 2010 National Book Award for poetry
  • “Muscular Music” (Tia Chuca Press, 1999), recipient of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award
  • “Hip Logic” (Penguin, 2002), winner of the 2001 National Poetry Series
  • “Wind in a Box” (Penguin, 2006)

His prose collection, “To Float in the Space Between: Drawings and Essays in Conversation with Etheridge Knight” (Wave Books, 2018), was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and winner of the Pegasus Award for Poetry Criticism.

A professor of English at New York University, Hayes has received fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation and Whiting Foundation.
