New Acquisitions

University Libraries is thankful for the many new collections it received over the last year. These gifts allow the library to build its offerings, enhance its collections and provide a more comprehensive experience for students, researchers and visitors. While selected gifts are highlighted here, all donations are essential to the development of the library, and the value of all generous gifts cannot be overemphasized. Frank Anderson Collection. Collection contains materials and photographs related to the 1962 integration of the University of Mississippi and race relations in general. Gift of Frank Anderson.

Donna Bailey Dye/Charles Noyes Collection. A collection consisting primarily of letters between Donna Bailey Dye and her UM English professor Charles Noyes. Gift of Donna Bailey Dye.

Bishop Duncan M. Gray Jr. Collection. A collection of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs and other materials relating to the life and career of Gray, a civil rights advocate. Includes correspondence related to the integration of UM in 1962. Gift of Bishop Duncan M. Gray Jr.

Robert A. Herring III Collection. A collection of three newspaper scrapbooks outlining the events surrounding the integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962. The scrapbooks were kept by Oxford native Herring, who was in 11th grade at the time. Gift of Robert A. Herring III.

John Leslie Collection. Leslie served as the mayor of Oxford, Miss., from 1973 until 1997. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, manuscripts, reports, photographs and newspaper clippings. Gift of the Leslie family.

Andrew P. Mullins Jr. Collection. A collection of reports on educational policy in Mississippi dating from 1951 to 2012, material produced by UM for the Legislature, items related to the 2008 presidential debate on campus and materials that connect to Mullins’ book The Measure of Our Days: Writings of William F. Winter, including speeches and writing by Gov. William F. Winter, several of which do not appear in the book. Chief of staff for Chancellor Dan Jones before retiring in June, Mullins has significantly influenced education policy and implementation in Mississippi.

William E. Ready Collection. A collection of two letters of appreciation from President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to U.S. Marshal Ernst S. Mike, who was injured in the 1962 riot on campus. The collection is named for Meridian resident William Ready, who fought to integrate Mississippi schools and represented the Loyalist Democrats who sought to integrate the traditionally segregated Democratic Party in Mississippi. Martha Alice Stewart: Time on Parchman Farm Collection. Contains nearly 200 images from the 1930s as well as personal documents relating to the life of Stewart, a nurse on Parchman Farm. Gift of Kate Stewart, Catherine King and Bryan King.

Rev. Murphey Wilds Collection. A collection of correspondence relating primarily to the integration of UM in 1962. Wilds was minister of First Presbyterian Church in Oxford, Miss., at the time of the integration and riot and spoke out in favor of nonviolence. Gift of Scott M. Wilds and Frank M. Wilds.
