Day 9: University of Mississippi Medical Center

unnamedThe University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the premier health facility in Mississippi and the state’s only academic health science center. With an enrollment of about 2,800 students, it is the home of the university’s schools of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry, the upper levels of the pharmacy program and graduate studies for other health-related occupations.

But UMMC is more than just an educational institute. It is also a center for research. The world’s first heart transplant was conducted at the Medical Center. More recently, university researchers have also partnered with other institutes for the Jackson Heart Study, the largest study in history to examine genetic factors of heart disease and other illnesses affecting African-Americans in large numbers.

The Medical Center also greatly influences medical education around the world. It’s home to the world’s best-selling medical physiology textbook, which has been translated into 18 different languages.

We are so proud of UMMC’s accomplishments and we are thankful to have such an amazing medical facility.
