OXFORD, Miss. – Spencer Tillman, one of the best-known football analysts in America, will talk Friday (April 20) at the University of Mississippi about a career that has taken him from the playing field to network television.
Tillman, who earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism while a star athlete at the University of Oklahoma, will speak with students at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at 11 a.m. The program, which is co-sponsored by Ole Miss Athletics and the Overby Center, is free and open to the public.Tillman will be on campus to serve as the keynote speaker for the annual Chucky Mullins Award banquet Thursday night.
“We’re delighted that he can spend some time with our journalism students – and others who are interested in his work – while he’s here,” said Overby fellow Curtis Wilkie. “His success should serve as an inspiration for young people.”
Tillman was an All-American running back for the University of Oklahoma and captain of the school’s 1985 national championship team. He went on to play eight seasons in the National Football League for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers, where he was co-captain of the Super Bowl champions.
Following his football days, Tillman went into broadcast work. He has served as a radio talk show host, an analyst and an anchor for CBS Sports and Fox Sports Net shows. At CBS, Tillman gained renown for his work as a reporter and commentator on college sports as co-host of “College Football Today.” He is also co-host of “Houston Texans Inside the Game,” a 30-minute post-game show for KTRK in Houston during the NFL season.
