UM Receives First Batch of H1N1 Vaccine

To
administer doses Wednesday, Thursday

OXFORD,
Miss. – The University of Mississippi has received 1,000 doses of H1N1
(swine flu) vaccine and plans to administer the nasal spray Wednesday and
Thursday (Nov. 18 and 19).

Nasal
spray (live virus) is indicated for all healthy students 24 years old or
younger. Also, if a healthy student, faculty or staff member is 49 years
old or younger but has a child in the household or is a caregiver for
children 6 months or younger, he or she should receive the vaccine.

The
vaccine will be administered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the
Johnson Commons Ballroom.

Those
wishing to receive the vaccine must present an Ole Miss ID card.

The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has determined which groups
receive the vaccine first. UM’s Student Health Service will follow those
guidelines for administering the nasal spray to individuals with no
underlying medical conditions.

Target
groups include:
– Household contacts and caregivers of children 6 months old or younger
(caregivers must be 49 or younger)
– Health care workers under the age of 49
– Students 18 and under
– Young adults 24 or younger

Vaccination against H1N1 is recommended even if a person has been
diagnosed with flu. Individuals who have taken FluMist for the seasonal
flu should wait four weeks before getting the H1N1 nasal vaccine.

Student
Health has also ordered vaccine that can be administered by injection but
officials don’t know when it will arrive.
