Junior Sprinter Broke The School’s 100-Meter Record At Drake Relays
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss junior Isiah Young has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Men’s Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Young received the same honor earlier in the outdoor season following the SEC/Big Ten Challenge.
At the Drake Relays over the weekend, Young broke the 18-year-old school 100-meter dash record with a phenomenal time of 10.08 to win the event. The previous school record was 10.11 set by Greg Saddler in 1994. His 100-meter title is the second ever captured by a Rebel at the Drake Relays.
The former Allen Community College standout raced against a group of professionals in the 200-meter special, finishing second only behind U.S. Olympian Wallace Spearmon. Young clocked a time of 20.34, which is just .01 off his career best and school-record time of 20.33 from earlier this season.
Young currently ranks second in the SEC and third in the NCAA in the 100, and also 15th in the world. He also ranks second in the SEC and fourth in the NCAA in the 200. He now boasts two of the world’s top eight 200-meter times this year.
Next up for Young and his No. 8 nationally ranked teammates is the Southeastern Conference Championships, which will be held May 10-13 in Baton Rouge, La.
