OXFORD, Miss. – The Croft Institute for International Studies at the University of Mississippi is hosting a workshop for K-12 teachers from Mississippi and Tennessee.
The 30-hour seminar, “Teaching About East Asia,” began June 12 and will end June 16. It is directed by Joshua Howard, Croft associate professor of Chinese history.
Since 1998, the Croft Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) have co-sponsored East Asia in the Classroom. The primary goal of this multi-year initiative, funded by the Freeman Foundation, is to encourage and facilitate teaching and learning about East Asia in elementary and secondary schools nationwide.
Participating in-service teachers will earn three continuing credits by attending the seminar, which brought 19 educators to campus this year.
“This impressive workshop was informative, synergetic, and energetic,” said Janelle Phipps an English teacher from Harding Academy of Memphis who has attended the workshop in the past. “Class sessions facilitate student discovery and model best practices.”
NCTA seminars serve more than 1,000 teachers yearly, and participants interact with East Asia specialists. They receive extensive readings and other materials, and discuss effective strategies for bringing East Asia into their classrooms.
