OXFORD, Miss. – Former Rebel right-hander and current St. Louis Cardinal Lance Lynn was selected to participate in the 2012 MLB All-Star game on Sunday when the organization announced rosters for both the American League and National League teams.
It is the first All-Star Game appearance for Lynn, who is one of four members of the defending World Series Champion Cardinals appearing on the roster. Coverage of the game will be provided by Fox Sports and begins at 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, July 10.
Lynn is the third Rebel to be named an MLB All-Star, joining Gee Walker (1937) and Don Kessinger (1968-72, 1974) in being selected to participate in the annual game. Walker was named an All-Star in 1937, but did not compete in the game because of injury and was replaced on the roster.
Lynn currently holds a 10-4 record with a 3.62 ERA through 16 games started and 97.0 innings pitched this season with St. Louis. He has struck out 128 and walked 45 while holding batters to a .230 batting average against in his time on the mound.
The 6’5” right-hander jumped out to a 6-0 start to the season after picking up the win in his first six games and went 8-1 through the months of April and May.
As a Rebel, Lynn had a standout career that earned him All-SEC honors in 2007 and 2008 before he was drafted by the Cardinals in the supplemental first round of the 2008 MLB Draft. Lynn was the 39th overall selection in the draft, making him one of 11 Ole Miss players drafted in the first 100 picks of the MLB Draft in the past eight seasons.
The right-hander helped Ole Miss advance to three straight NCAA Regionals and a pair of Super Regionals in his three-year career.
The Rebels claimed the 2006 Southeastern Conference Tournament during his freshman campaign before hosting an NCAA Regional and Super Regional. Ole Miss again hosted an NCAA Regional in 2007 before traveling to Arizona State for a Super Regional, the third consecutive for the Rebels. Ole Miss then traveled to top-seeded Miami for the 2008 NCAA Regional and advanced to the championship game before falling to the hosting Hurricanes.
Lynn posted a 22-12 record through 51 appearances as a Rebel and is second all-time in strikeouts with 332 for his career. He struck out 146 in 2007, setting the single-season record for strikeouts as he went 8-5 with a pair of complete-game shutouts.
