UM Alumnus Honored as Apple Distinguished Educator

Daniel Whitt’s innovative use of technology in the classroom has earned him the distinction of Apple Distinguished Educator. Whitt was one of 75 educators chosen from thousands to receive the honor.

The Apple award recognizes teachers in grades K-12 who incorporate its products in innovative ways inside and outside the classroom.

Whitt holds a BA in English from UM and a master’s degree in secondary education. He also attended the School of Audio Engineering in Manhattan. A broadcast journalism teacher at James Clemens High School in Madison, Ala., he co-founded the youth education nonprofit Youth Converts Culture. (His co-founder, Beth Sanders, of Alabama, also received the distinction from Apple.) In 2012, the nonprofit worked with youths in the high-poverty Perry County, Alabama, and received national recognition for its work.

According to Apple.com, Apple Distinguished Educators are “ambassadors of innovation, participating in and presenting at education events around the world.”
