Rebels Take Two From Southern Miss

Team Now 10-9 Overall

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 37 ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team took two matches from Southern Miss Sunday at the Gillom Sports Center, winning both by a 4-0 score.  With the wins, the Rebels have won five straight and improved to 10-9 overall.

After rain forced the matches indoors, the two teams decided to play singles first.  Freshman Mai El Kamash, ranked No. 82 in the nation, downed Kate Lanier 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Iris Verboven downed Elanor Grossman 6-2, 6-2 on court three, and then Erin Stephens, playing her first career match at No. 1 singles, defeated Alexus Coats 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the win.

The second match also began with singles, but this time with four, five and six.   Vief Vlaar was first off the court, beating Emily Nettles 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.  Freshman Allie Robbins followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5.  Verboven took care of Mackenzie Oskin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and then Santa Shumilina clinched it with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3.

The Rebels, who downed Mississippi State on Friday for their 24th straight in the series, return to SEC play next weekend at No. 2 Florida and South Carolina.
