University Museum and Historic Houses Receives MAC Grant

Grant enables curator of education to attend NAEA Conference

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Museum and Historic Houses has been awarded an $845 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.

The grant is a portion of the $1.5 million in grants the commission awarded in 2012-2013 and was used to send Emily Dean, the museum’s curator of education, to the 2013 National Art Education Association Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.“The UM Museum and Historic Houses is exceptionally pleased to have received this support of the Mississippi Arts Commission, which enabled our senior staff educator to participate in national dialog with her peers and benefit from a unique professional development opportunity,” said Robert Saarnio, museum director. “Emily’s attendance at the NAEA conference strengthens our capacity to provide enriching and meaningful educational programs for learners of all ages, and is evidence of MAC’s commitment to supporting the museum professionals of our state.”

The University Museum is active in arts education and outreach throughout north Mississippi and offers innovative programming, including the afterschool program Art Zone, Mini Masters for children ages 3-5, Summer Camp, group tours and Family Activity Days.

The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, was established in 1968. MAC is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Riley Foundation, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
