OXFORD, Miss. – As one of six ensembles in the United States Navy Band, the U.S. Navy Concert Band performs throughout the world and across the United States. The acclaimed band will grace the stage of the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts with a free concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 8.
Though the concert is free, tickets are required and may be picked up from the UM Box Office in the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, or 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays at the Ford Center. A ticket request form can also be downloaded from the Ford Center website and mailed to the UM Box Office. The tickets from mailed-in request forms will be held at will call and may be picked up at the Ford Center’s box office the night of the performance.
“In our ongoing efforts to secure performances of the highest caliber talent that are appropriate for a wide range of audiences, we are honored to present the U.S. Navy Concert Band,” said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director. “Their musical talent and commitment to service are an inspiring part of this concert for the entire community.”
The Concert Band is the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy Band. Its performance includes a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the U.S. Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for more than 85 years.
Besides national concert tours and an extensive local concert season, the Concert Band has been featured internationally at military tattoos and festivals in Stockholm, Quebec City and Oslo, Norway. All told, the U.S. Navy Band performs at more than 1,300 ceremonies and presents nearly 300 concerts yearly.
