OXFORD, Miss. – Roots and Shoots, an environmental
awareness student organization at the University of
Mississippi, is marking Climate Change Awareness Day
Thursday in cooperation with Focus the Nation, a national
education initiative.
The day features a 2:30 p.m. program in Shoemaker Hall,
Room 401, with several speakers scheduled, including Alicia
Waite, president of the student organization. The event is
free and open to the public.
“Focus the Nation is a nationwide day devoted to dialogue
and education on solutions to climate change,” Waite said.
“We are inviting both the university and Oxford community
to join us.”
Other speakers are Oxford Mayor Richard Howorth and UM
chemical engineering professor Wei-Lin Chen.
Waite is slated to discuss the club’s efforts, Howorth will
focus on the city’s plans for addressing the problem and
Chen plans to talk about the chemical aspects of global
warming.
Formerly known as the Sierra Student Coalition, the club is
more than an environmental group, Waite said.
“Roots and Shoots also encompasses humanitarian and social
issues,” she said. For additional information, contact the
