“Glenn Miller’s arrangements are just classic – standards from the big band era,” said Kate Meacham, assistant director of marketing for the Ford Center. “The Glenn Miller Orchestra has continued the tradition of his arrangements. They have kept his way of presenting the music alive.”
The show is set for 8 p.m. Tickets range from $30 to $40 for various seating and $10 to $15 for UM students and faculty enrolled in the Cultural Passport Program. Tickets are available by calling 662-915-7411, by visiting the UM Box Office in the Student Union from noon to 4 p.m. weekdays or the Ford Center Box Office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, or by going to http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/
Glenn Miller, an American jazz musician, arranger and composer, was one of the most successful dance bandleaders in the swing era of the 1930s and ’40s. In 1942, he broke up his band and volunteered for the Army to lead the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. On Dec. 15, 1944, Miller’s plane disappeared en route to France. He was pronounced dead a year later.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 as a tribute to Miller’s memory. The orchestra has been performing ever since to positive reviews.
“It’s going to be a great performance,” Meacham said. “If you love big band music, it is one of the top big band orchestras around. If you just like good music, there will be top-quality musicians that are playing many well-known songs and pieces. It will be a lot of fun.”
