“The Soweto Gospel Choir is an awe-inspiring vocal ensemble, performing in five different languages, with inspirational programs of tribal, traditional and popular African and international gospel songs,” said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director. “Earthy rhythms, rich harmonies and charismatic a cappella performances combine to uplift the soul and express South Africa’s great hope for the future.”
Formed in 2002 by executive producer-director Beverly Bryer and the late musical director David Mulovhedzi, the choir has become an overnight, award-winning sensation. In 2003, they won a Helpmann Award, Australia’s prestigious performing arts award for “Best Contemporary Music Concert.” A year later, the ensemble won both the American Gospel Music Award for “Best Choir” and the “Best International Choir.” In 2007, the group won a Grammy Award for “Best Traditional World Music” for its CD, “Blessed.”
The group has performed throughout Europe, Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The choir, which has sung for President Bill Clinton, South African President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, has shared the stage with music legends Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle and Tina Turner.
