OXFORD, Miss. – The 17th annual Ole Miss Insurance Symposium is expected to draw more than 200 professionals to the University of Mississippi March 21-22 for networking and continuing education opportunities.

Hosted by the School of Business Administration’s nationally ranked risk management and insurance program, the symposium serves the regional insurance industry and connects students with employers and future colleagues. This year’s event at the Inn at Ole Miss is themed “Moving Ahead in Volatile Times.”

“The Ole Miss Insurance Symposium offers attendees the opportunity to earn continuing education credit, listen to industry leaders, network with fellow insurance professionals and support the RMI program,” said Andre Liebenberg, Robertson Chair of Insurance. “It is an important way to attract new visitors to our campus and our state.”
Registration is $150, which includes an opportunity to earn up to nine continuing education units for Mississippi and Tennessee insurance licensees. It also covers an opening reception at the Oxford-University Club from 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 21, sponsored by Webb, Sanders & Williams PLLC.

Thanks to generous private support, students taking RMI classes can attend the symposium for free. The speaker lineup includes leaders from international, national and regional firms, representing various industry players from brokers to carriers to risk managers and different market segments.

The speakers include Graham Clarke, CEO of Miller Insurance Services; Robert Cornett, president of Cornett Group, Inc.; Michael Hughes, president of Safeco Insurance; Craig Johnson, president and CEO of FCCI Insurance Group; Joshua Gold, attorney and shareholder in Anderson, Kill & Olick P.C.; Andrew Nadolna of Chartis Insurance; Joel Wood, senior vice president of government affairs for the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers; and Julie Long, senior director of global risk management for Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Speakers will share their unique perspectives, as industry leaders, of the state of the industry and their strategies for successfully leading their organizations in the current environment, Liebenberg said.

“The theme reflects the current challenge for the insurance industry,” Liebenberg said. “While the industry is highly resilient and remains very financial secure, many insurers have experienced volatility in their investment portfolios and also in claims resulting from unusually high levels of natural disasters.”

Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss head football coach, is the luncheon speaker for Thursday (March 22).

Besides professionals from Mississippi and Tennessee, the symposium generally attracts nearly 100 students, said Camille Mitchell, RMI project coordinator for the business school.
