Mississippians Jazz Ensemble To Perform Spring Concerts April 15-16

OXFORD, Miss. – The Mississippians, the University of Mississippi’s principal student jazz ensemble, is slated to present its annual spring concert April 15 at Nutt Auditorium.

A second concert is scheduled April 16 at the Jackson Academy Performing Arts Center in Jackson.

The ensemble is to perform the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie along with works by contemporary composers Rob McConnell, Charles Mingus, Theloneous Monk and others.

”We are particularly enjoying working up an outlandish arrangement of Gershwin’s ‘I Got Rhythm,'” said Michael Worthy, associate professor of music and ensemble director. “The arrangement uses several rhythmic devices that seemingly mock the assertion of the title.”

Admission to the April 15 concert on campus is free to the public. Admission to the April 16 concert in Jackson is $5 at the door.
