Oxford Native Broke The School Pole Vault Record Last Weekend
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After breaking the school pole vault record over the weekend, Ole Miss’ Sam Kendricks was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Track & Field Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kendricks, who hails from Oxford, Miss., broke the 27-year-old school record on his way to victory at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. He cleared a height of 17-11, which broke Baker Vinci’s school record of 17-10 set in 1985 (seven years before Kendricks was born). It was his sixth victory in the last seven meets at which he has competed.
Kendricks now ranks seventh in the NCAA, second nationally among freshmen, first in the NCAA East Region and 19th in the world in the pole vault this year. In his first year of college, the Rebel rookie has now set the school record for indoor and outdoor pole vault.
It is the second freshman of the week honor for Kendricks this season. He also garnered the recognition on April 10.
Ole Miss will compete at the prestigious Drake Relays this Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
