Hughes received a bachelor’s degree in real estate, banking and finance, and managerial finance. She is working for a mortgage company in Washington, D.C.

Made possible through the Turner-Heggeman Memorial Scholarship Fund, with matching funds provided by the SIOR, the award recognizes Hughes’ excellence in real estate coursework. It was presented to her at the inaugural meeting of the Real Estate Advisory Board of UM’s School of Business Administration.

“Obviously, we are always excited when our students are recognized for their achievements, but Lauren’s scholarship is particularly meaningful as she competed against students from other universities in the region, including LSU and MSU,” said Matthew Hill, assistant professor. “Lauren worked extremely hard throughout her real estate finance coursework and is deserving of this scholarship. Foundations and organizations offering competitive or performance-based scholarship programs are deeply appreciated by our finance department.”

The Turner-Heggeman Scholarship was created in 1996 and renamed in 2000 by the Louisiana/Alabama/Northwest Florida Chapter in memory of Buzz Heggeman of Mobile and James E. Turner of Hattiesburg. The two long-term members of the local SIOR chapter were experts in the field of industrial real estate for several decades throughout the Gulf Coast region of Alabama and Mississippi.
