Charlie Miles, academic instructional technology consultant, has been named Staff Council’s Staff Member of the Month for January.
To help us get to know him better, he answered some questions for Inside Ole Miss.
IOM: How long have you worked at Ole Miss?
Miles: I began working at Ole Miss in 2007 in the music department but came to IT in 2018.
IOM: What is your hometown?
Miles: Grenada
IOM: Talk about your favorite Ole Miss memory?
Miles: When I was still in high school, I was invited by the UM Band to come visit. Once I saw the band’s Grove routine and the fans going crazy … I was sold. Game day and that Grove routine is a special level of, “You gotta see this.”
IOM: What do you enjoy most about your position or the department in which you work?
Miles: The fantastic folks I work with. Top to bottom, these folks are absolutely the best of the best.
IOM: What do you like to do when you are not at work?
Miles: I’m always working on some kind of audio/video editing project. But I also like restoring old hand tools. I have some from my great-grandfather that are rusted and not really usable. I like bringing them back to life.
IOM: What is one thing on your bucket list?
Miles: Visit the Rocky Mountains
IOM: What is your favorite movie?
Miles: “Avengers Endgame”
IOM: What is your favorite Ole Miss tradition?
Miles: Hotty Toddy, of course, is the obvious answer. Being a band guy in my former life, the Grove routine is hard to top.
IOM: What is a fun fact about you?
Miles: I almost got left in downtown New York City in high school because of a scheduling goof. Older fellow showed me how to jaywalk and all turned out fine.
IOM: If you could have lunch with anyone alive or dead/fictional or real, who would it be and why?
Miles: It would have to be Winston Churchill. Back during WWII, it was beyond comprehension the amount of stress he was under. Gen. MacArthur and Patton would also be on that list.
IOM: What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Miles: Thankful, dedicated, flexible; my job is constantly changing, so flexibility is the name of the game
IOM: If you could visit one time or place in world history – past, present, or future – what would it be?
Miles: Watching the Eiffel Tower being constructed
IOM: If I could be an animal for a day, I would be a _______.
Miles: Cheetah
