Message from the Dean

Dear Friends,

I would like to tell you about some news here in University Libraries. In February, we learned that Michael Upton, who served as the development officer for the libraries for a number of years, was promoted to development officer for the School of Applied Sciences here at UM. We are sorry to lose Michael but do wish him the best in his new assignment. As noted in this issue, we have named Angela Barlow as our new development officer. She started her new position June 17. We are excited to have Angela here and look forward to having our friends and donors meet her soon.

We also welcomed a new assistant dean for public service, Jocelyn Tipton, on June 3. Jocelyn comes to us from Eastern Illinois University and has held positions at Yale and Johns Hopkins universities. Jocelyn will be overseeing a number of areas in the libraries including instruction, information services, access services, Web services, the science library and interlibrary loan.

As noted in this issue, we received news that Sue Hart, who retired as research librarian for the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and who was a very good friend of the libraries, left a generous estate gift for the libraries. This endowment will be used for acquisition of materials in the area of Southern studies. Such gifts are so important to maintaining strong library collections.

Best wishes for a cool, relaxing summer, and come visit us soon.

Sincerely,

Julia Rholes

Dean of University Libraries
