Cozart Part Of Reds’ Explosive Offense Early In Season
Each week OleMissSports.com we’ll take a look at former Rebels in the Major Leagues and update Rebel fans on how the individual players (and their respective teams) are performing in a race for a pennant and ultimately a World Championship.
Here is a week 1 update on Rebels in Major League Baseball.
#8 Chris Coghlan | OF | Miami Marlins
Has played in six games so far this season for the Miami Marlins who are off to a slow start in the NL East with the surging Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals off to a quick start early in the season. Miami is 1-7 on the season.
#2 Zack Cozart | SS | Cincinnati Reds
Has played in eight games for the Reds and been a part of some early offensive explosions as the Reds sit atop the NL Central and are in the midst of a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Cozart turned in a stellar 2-for-4 performance with 5 RBI and two home runs to help Cincinnati pick up a 15-0 win over Washington (4/5) and went 1-for-4 with the only run scored in a loss to St. Louis and former Rebel pitcher Lance Lynn on Tuesday night. Cincinnati is 5-3 heading into todays game with St. Louis after splitting the first two games.
#31 Lance Lynn | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals
Right-hander Lance Lynn is 1-0 on the season after picking up a win over the Cincinnati Reds and Cozart on Tuesday night. It was the second appeaance of the season for Lynn who holds a 4.50 ERA through 10.0 innings of work. In the win on Tuesday, Lynn fanned 10 batters in 6.0 innings and allowed the one run, scored by Cozart. St. Louis and Cincinnati take the field in the series finale on Wednesday afternoon with first place in the NL Central on the line.
#15 Seth Smith | OF/DH | Oakland Athletics
Seth Smith is hitting at a .308 clip after playing in four games so far this season for the Oakland A’s. Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate on opening day against the Seattle Mariners, providing two of the three hits recorded by Oakland. He also helped Oakland pick up a series win over Houston, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI against the Astros (4/6) in a 6-3 win. He then went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double in a 9-3 win over Houston (4/7). Oakland is currently second in the AL West.
