Rebels Allow Gamecocks Only 10 Games Total

OXFORD, Miss. – The No. 35 ranked Ole Miss women’s tennis team dominated Jacksonville State 7-0 here Saturday at the Gillom Sports Center to improve to 3-1 on the year.

The Rebels only allowed the Gamecocks 10 games total in doubles and singles combined on the way to their third shutout of the season.

The day began with Ole Miss sweeping the doubles by a combined score of 18-0.  Among the winners, freshman Zalina Khairudinova and junior Julia Jones won their sixth consecutive match and improved to 4-0 in dual matches.

In singles, the Rebels kept their foot on the gas pedal, winning easily in all six matches. Khairduinova won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, Caroline Rohde-Moe won 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot, and Julia Jones beat her opponent 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.  The bottom three matches went 6-0, 6-2 for Mai El Kamash, and shutouts for Marija Milutinovic and Iris Verboven.

“We did a good job of taking care of business and staying focused,” head coach Mark Beyers said.  “We worked on some things and got better today. That is what you want to get out of these type matches.”

Now the Rebels turn their focus to the outdoor season and a doubleheader on Feb. 21 against Lipscomb and Tennessee State.

“Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we’ll be able to get outside and start practicing to get ready for Lipscomb, Tennessee State, Memphis and then the SEC schedule,” Beyers said.
