For University of Mississippi employees, students and members of the public looking for a fun way to escape the monotony of a long, hot summer without spending extravagantly, Ole Miss Outdoors is offering simple, affordable solutions: seven exciting excursions in some of the Southeast’s most scenic venues.

Interested persons may choose to take any one of five daylong trips or two weekend trips scheduled between May 30 and Aug. 1. Day trips include hiking in the Dismals Canyon Nature Conservatory near Phil Campbell, Alabama (May 30), climbing and bouldering at Tishomingo State Park (June 13), and canoe/kayak trips on the Tallahatchie River near Abbeville (July 5) and on the Ghost River near Moscow, Tennessee (Aug. 1).

Weekend getaways include white water kayaking on Locust Fork River near Snead, Alabama (June 26-28), and backpacking and climbing at Foster Falls in Jasper, Tennessee (July 10-12).

Fees range from $25 to $80 for UM students and from $30 to $90 for UM employees and the public. Trip cost includes transportation, park entry fees, gear rentals, a T-shirt and trained guides. The registration deadline is the Tuesday before each trip (which is also the day of a participant pre-trip meeting).

“Trips are limited to 10 participants and are led by two trained student employees who are certified Wilderness First Responders,” said Shannon Richardson, assistant director of campus recreation and Ole Miss Outdoors. “Everyone and anyone is welcome on our trips.”
