Team Posts Second Highest Aggregate Of The Year
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss rifle team shot a season-high 2348 in air rifle Sunday on the final day of the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
Ole Miss finished the three-day event with a total of 4634 for fifth in the final team standings. It marked the team’s second highest aggregate score of the season.
In the first relay, juniors Abbey Stanec and Melissa Quartarone each fired a 589. Senior Kim Coffey competed in the second relay in her final match for the Rebels, and almost got into the finals as well with a 589. All three missed getting in a shoot-off for a place in the finals by just one shot.
“It was fantastic day,” head coach Valerie Boothe said. “I wish we could have shot those scores earlier in the year, but I am glad that we could end that way. It’s too bad we just missed getting someone into the finals by a point. Kim Coffey really came through for us in her last match today. It was great to see her close out her career like that.”
Junior Alivia Yeager rounded out the Rebel scoring with a 581.
West Virginia posted a 2370 in air rifle for a total aggregate score of 4705 to capture the team title. Kentucky finished second with a total of 4690, and Nebraska took third with a 4647. Individual medalist honors went to WVU’s Petra Zublasing with an aggregate of 1192.
“We shot our second highest score of the season, so that’s a positive,” Boothe said. “We just need to work on doing that all year, but it’s nice to finish on a good note.”
While most of the Rebels pack up their guns and put to bed the 2013 season, Stanec continues hers March 8-9 at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. She will compete in both smallbore and air rifle as an individual.
