OXFORD, Miss. – One of the most popular Irish dance shows in the world, “Rhythm of the Dance” is coming to the University of Mississippi for an Oct. 23 performance at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
“‘Rhythm of the Dance’ is in the tradition of ‘Riverdance,’ which was tremendously popular,” said Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director. “Celtic dance and music traditions are fascinating and touch on every mood from hauntingly mysterious to exuberantly joyful.”
“Rhythm of the Dance” is a two-hour dance and music extravaganza that relives the journey of Irish Celts throughout history. The richly costumed show combines traditional dance and music with the advantages of contemporary theatrical technology.
The show is set for 8 p.m. Tickets range from $32 to $42 for various seating. Tickets are available by calling 662-915-7411, by visiting the UM Box Office in the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays or the Ford Center Box Office at 10 a.m. on the day of the show, or by going to http://www.fordcenter.org.
“Rhythm of the Dance” is internationally rated as one of the most popular and busiest Irish step dance shows in the world. The show aspires to preserve the traditions of Irish step dancing while presenting it in a modern format. The show features a live band, three tenors and some 22 dancers.
“It’s a great tradition that these very popular Celtic dance and music shows have, and it’s taken the country by storm,” Easterbrook said. “‘Rhythm of the Dance’ had a tremendously successful tour last year, and their stop in Oxford is a continuation of that same tour. This a major national tour enjoyed by many in major metropolitan areas. We are happy and excited to bring this company to the region for those who live in and around Oxford to enjoy. “
