OXFORD, Miss. – Sculptor and educator Durant Thompson takes art lovers on
a preview of his “Navigation” exhibition during a brown bag
lecture set for noon Nov. 19 at the University of Mississippi
Museum.
That same
evening, the opening reception for the exhibit is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m.
at Southside Gallery, 150 Courthouse Square in Oxford.
During the
brown bag lecture, Thompson, assistant professor of art and head of
sculpture at UM, plans to discuss the ongoing journey of creating his
sculptures and the decisions he has made along the way. Weathered wood,
rusted steel and broken bits of sheet metal all reflect the history of
his journey.
Thompson’s
sculptures feature objects and images from the early 19th-century
Industrial Revolution and the Middle Ages. Railroad equipment, old
machinery, snowplows, weaponry and castles are all represented in his
work.
