Seven Employees Receive UM Outstanding Staff Awards

Individuals and teams recognized for excellence in service categories, operations

OXFORD, Miss. – The associate director for academic enrichment in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is the University of Mississippi‘s 2019 Overall Outstanding Category winner.

Charlie Ball-Burrell was recognized during the annual Staff Appreciation Awards program Friday (May 17) in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, capping off the annual Staff Appreciation Week activities. Ball-Burrell will receive a $1,000 stipend and two Ole Miss football season tickets.

“You all provide the support services for our staff, faculty, students and visitors that make our campus the great place that it is,” said Interim Chancellor Larry Sparks, who presented the overall award. “Our staff is vital to the successful operation of our campuses. Thank you, everyone, for all that you do.”

Sparks presented six other employees with Outstanding Staff Member Awards, which include a $500 stipend, in their respective EEO categories. Winners were Katrina Caldwell, vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement, for EEO1; Alicia Goodson, administrative coordinator for the university’s Tupelo regional campus, for EEO 3; Lila Neely, program coordinator-assistant to the director of corporate relations and MBA services, for EEO 4; Dennis Bullard, assistant director of facilities, for EEO 5; James Calvin Malone, supervisor of the Powerline Shop, for EEO 6 and Candace Smith, custodial supervisor in facilities management; for EEO 7.

Whitman Smith, director of admissions, announced the names of long-standing employees who were presented either a certificate, lapel pin, plaque or keepsake in recognition of each person’s 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 30-plus years of service to the institution. Applause, cheers and even standing ovations from the audience greeted those whose tenure with the university exceeded three decades.

Kathy Tidwell, director of contractual services and university licensing, was honored for her 50 years of service with a painting.

Following the individual recognitions, staff assistant Danielle Noonan presented the Daniel W. Jones Team Service Award to three different groups. Honored were the Inn at Ole Miss events team, the Booneville regional center admissions office and the University Police Department rallies operational team.

The winner of a T-shirt design contest for Staff Appreciation Week was Sara Krueger, an executive assistant in the university’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
