The University of Mississippi
Spring 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Initiates
Sixty-one University of Mississippi students were initiated this spring into the campus chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the liberal arts. A student’s selection for membership in Phi Beta Kappa is based on the evidence of broad cultural interests, scholarly achievement and good character. The honor is conferred upon fewer than 10 percent of each graduating class. While students are usually elected for membership during their senior year, juniors or graduate students may also be chosen. UM was granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in October 2000, becoming the first public higher education institution in the state to shelter a chapter. Charter members were initiated in April 2001.
