NEARLY $2M TO HELP REVIVE STATE ECONOMY:
- Two separate grants from the Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation will help to build and expand business and job opportunities for the state’s residents and the university’s students.
- The first grant ($370,000) is expanding the capacity of the University of Mississippi’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to help students and others who want to start new businesses in Mississippi. The funding will provide support for the center’s consulting program for three years. Through the Student Entrepreneurship and New Venture Development Program, the center will create a student-led consulting program that focuses on helping startup and early-stage Mississippi businesses achieve growth and profitability. - The second grant ($1.6 million) will fund research through the UM McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement. The research will be aimed at increasing economic development in Mississippi communities. The grant was awarded to the McLean Institute for four years to support UM student and faculty research on poverty, education, asset building and health care within these communities. * Chancellor Names Renowned Pianist as Artist-In-Residence:Bruce Levingston has been named the Chancellor’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College Artist-in-Residence. The new position is made possible thanks to a generous endowment from Lester “Ruff” Fant through the Lester G. Fant III Charitable Lead Annuity Trust. Fant’s father taught at UM for 30 years.
