1880-1900
In 1882, Ole Miss was one of the first universities in the South to admit women and the first to hire a female faculty member, Sarah McGehee Isom, in 1885.
1901-1921
From 1919 to 1921, Ole Miss football was coached by R. L. Sullivan, who also coached basketball.
1922-1942
In 1927, the Graduate School was created under Chancellor Robert Burwell Fulton’s leadership.
1943-1963
In 1962, the university enrolled its first African American student, James Meredith. The university celebrated the 60th anniversary of integration last year.
1963-1984
In 1963, surgeons performed the world’s first human lung transplant at UMMC in Jackson.
1985-2005
In 1997, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College opened its doors to the college’s first students.
2006-today
In 2008, the university hosted the first presidential debate held in Mississippi between then-Senators John McCain and Barack Obama.
