What did students wear to class in 1880?

Much about University of Mississippi has changed in the last 175 years, but nothing has changed so much, perhaps, as its students’ fashion. Look below to see UM Fashion Through the Ages.

1880-1900

In 1882, Ole Miss was one of the first universities in the South to admit women and the first to hire a female faculty member, Sarah McGehee Isom, in 1885.

1901-1921

 From 1919 to 1921, Ole Miss football was coached by R. L. Sullivan, who also coached basketball.

1922-1942

In 1927, the Graduate School was created under Chancellor Robert Burwell Fulton’s leadership.

1943-1963

In 1962, the university enrolled its first African American student, James Meredith. The university celebrated the 60th anniversary of integration last year.

In 1963, surgeons performed the world’s first human lung transplant at UMMC in Jackson.

1985-2005

In 1997, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College opened its doors to the college’s first students.

In 2008, the university hosted the first presidential debate held in Mississippi between then-Senators John McCain and Barack Obama.
