OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss community joined University of Mississippi ROTC cadets as they carried the nation’s colors through campus and downtown Oxford during a memorial run honoring those who were killed, as well as the first responders who rushed in to help the victims, during the 9/11 attacks 13 years ago.
More than 300 cadets and community members completed the nearly 2-mile run bright and early Thursday morning.
“The run went great and we were very happy with the turnout,” said Army Master Sgt. Matt Hayes, a senior military instructor at UM. “We had great support from (Athletics Director) Ross Bjork, (Director of Special Events) Christine Wallace and several others.”
After the run, Hayes and UM women’s soccer coach Matt Mott spoke for a short time to conclude the event.
“I want to thank all the cadets and runners who ran this morning,” Hayes said. “Remember, our nation is stronger than ever.”
