UM Students Initiated Into Phi Beta Kappa

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa welcomed 59 new members April 13 in a campus initiation ceremony.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the liberal arts. A student’s selection for membership is based on the evidence of broad cultural interests, scholarly achievement and good character. The honor is conferred upon fewer than 10 percent of each graduating class. While students are usually selected for membership during their senior year, juniors or graduate students may also be chosen.

UM was granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in October 2000, becoming the first public higher education institution in the state to shelter a chapter. Charter members were initiated in April 2001.
