Weekly Summer Update
OXFORD, Miss. – With the 2011-12 Ole Miss Athletics season officially in the books, several members of the Rebel women’s golf team will be in action all throughout the summer. Stay up to date on the Rebels competing in various amateur tournaments with our weekly “Where Are The Rebels?” weekly update.
Rising sophomore Taelor Rubin and redshirt-freshman Kaitlin Vollare competing in the Eastern Amateur June 12-14 at the Country Club of York in York, Pa. The tournament features 80 of the top amateurs and collegiate players playing 54 holes of stroke play.
Rubin competed in 8 of 10 tournaments for the Rebels during her freshman campaign this past season and helped lead the Rebels to their fourth NCAA Regional appearance.
Incoming freshman Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) begins competing in the prestigious Rolex Junior Girls Championship Tuesday at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The 72-hole stroke-play event includes 72 players from 15 state and five countries and features 23 Rolex Junior All-Americans. The field also includes 9 of the top 10 girls in the Polo Golf Rankings.
Newton, who will join the team in August, qualified for the 2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship as well as the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. In 2011, she posted three top 10 finishes in AJGA events, including runner up at the AJGA Savannah Quarters.
LPGA Tour players Morgan Pressel (2005), Julieta Granada (2004), Paula Creamer (2003), In-Bee Park (2002) and Brittany Lang (2001) are among the list of famed past champions at the Rolex Junior Championship.
